89 Years After Popeye’s Introduction, The Sailor Man Is Coming To YouTube

New Popeye cartoons are on their way to YouTube. The iconic “sailor man” will star in new adventures on his official YouTube channel thanks to a deal between family entertainment company WildBrain and Popeye licenser King Features Syndicate.

According to Variety, the pact between WildBrain and King Features will see the former company take control of the Popeye YouTube channel, which launched last year. “WildBrain has the secret sauce that will help Popeye connect with his audience of millions around the world while growing his fan base exponentially through fresh new animation as we head into his [90th] anniversary year,” said King Features president C.J. Kettler.

The Popeye YouTube channel has already been stocked with several animations, some of which have been titled “All-New Popeye.” In one, the spinach-loving seaman, his gal pal Olive Oyl, and his nemesis Bluto end up on a remote island.

Popeye, who will turn 90 next year, is not the first animated character to find new life on the internet. Several classic cartoons from the Warner Bros. catalog, for example, received new episodes through the animation streaming service Boomerang.

Though there is still plenty more digital Popeye  content to come, early returns on the sailor’s YouTube channel have been positive. Over about a year and a half of activity, that hub has received more than 10 million views.
